Final Orchestration Assignment: Due December 16th.
Our final exam time is 12/16, 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm. We will read all assignments at this time.
From the two-piano arrangement of the Rite of Spring, you will orchestrate the first 28 measures of the “Apparition of the Young Girls.” (Indicated on the score) You may use the following instrumentation:
- 1 Flute
- 1 Bb Clarinet
- 1 Alto Sax
- 1 Trumpet
- 2 Trombones (Tenor and Bass)
- Harp
- Piano
- Percussion (2 players)
- Marimba (below C4, nothing larger than a 6th in one hand)
- Xylophone
- Vibraphone
- Glockenspiel
- Timpani (4, ranging from F2 – F5)
- Snare Drum
- Suspended Cymbal
- Bass Drum
- 3 Violins
- 1 Viola
- 1 Double Bass
IMPORTANT: Each percussionist can only play two instruments – or three if one person plays snare drum, bass drum, and suspended cymbal. Make individual parts for each percussion instrument (which could mean multiple parts per player).
Will Newbill passed along a very good link about orchestrating for percussion. Read it!
The score and recording are in iLocker. You may take some liberties in orchestrating the excerpt. Since you have multiple players, and not just four hands of piano, you can add more figuration if you feel it is warranted. You can also adjust octave placements if necessary. However, remember that you are trying to make a good faith effort to score the work – not create your own remix of the Rite of Spring.
