Listen to and study the score (in Burkhart) for:
- Debussy, “La Cathédrale engloutie” from Préludes Book I, pp. 415–419
- Bartok, “Diminished Fifth,” no. 101 from Mikrokosmos vol. IV, p. 151.
Both works can be found on Naxos.
Be able to comment on scale formations used in each, with possible modes and/or transpositions. Also note whether each example is limiting its harmonic (chordal) choices to notes within the scales being used.
