(compMus2) Reading Assignment: Cowell and Merzbow

Due Wednesday, 9/17

Reading, from Audio Culture:

Henry Cowell, “The Joys of Noise.” pp. 22 – 24

“The Beauty of Noise: an Interview with Masami Akita of Merzbow.” pp. 59 – 61

Since both are talking about noise as musically pleasurable occurrence, write me a couple of short sentences for each article that illustrates how they describe this pleasure.

Cowell was an American 20th-century composer who greatly expanded the performance technique of the piano, often credited with discovering inside-the-piano performance possibilities.

Merzbow is a noise-electronica artist. You can hear a couple of tracks on his MySpace page.
