Research paper, due 6/12 (by midnight, via email).
Choose from one of the following composer/piece combinations.
- John Cage, Williams Mix
- Mario Davidovsky, Synchronism No. 6
- Jonathan Harvey, Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco
- Paul Lansky, Six Fantasies on a Poem by Thomas Campion
- Steve Reich, Come Out OR Piano Phase OR Violin Phase
- Karlheinz Stockhausen, Kontakte OR Gesang der Juenlinge
- Morton Subotnick, Silver Apples of the Moon
- Iannis Xenakis, Mycenae-Alpha
Your research project will consist of a 5-page paper that,
- provides a brief biographical context of the composer (years, major style periods, influences, important pieces);
- provides a brief overview of the work, including type of technology used in the making of the work and overall form; and
- provides a more detailed look at a significant section of the work.
Where possible, look for primary sources (writings by the composer). Use other sources to fill out a broader understanding of the work and composer. Remember that our library has electronic access to the Computer Music Journal and Perspectives of New Music. Both titles are excellent resources, and can be found via JSTOR.
Provide citations where appropriate. I do not care what research style you use.
